How it all started
…and so we start on a journey alien in nature to me…the art of ‘blogging!’
I have to admit I’m usually described as not short of a word or two to say whether that be spoken or written, alas though, when being persuaded that I really should start blogging, I was a little lost for words never mind understanding, on what that may actually mean. Fast forward a few internet searches on tips and articles on how to blog and, well, I’m throwing caution to the wind and starting on where I think are the topics and areas of ‘The Sunart Soap Co.’ I think you’d like to know more about…
…and where better to start than the beginning! So for this post I’d like to give you an insight into how it all started, the roots of The Sunart Soap Co.
Loch Sunart, Strontian.
‘A long time ago, in a holiday house far, far away…’
The beginnings of The Sunart Soap Co, are actually forever bound to a chance encounter upon a run-down cedar clad house in the village of Strontian on the shores of Loch Sunart. Whilst searching online for a small simple family home away from home, I came across what turned into a near 10 year renovation project on the wonderfully wild Ardnamurchan Peninsula in the West Highlands of Scotland.
We spent many a wonderful family holiday there watching my two boys grow into the young fine adults they now are. However the pressures of school and the many and varied activities of my boys meant less and less time being spent relaxing and exploring the peninsula and a feeling that perhaps it could be let out to pay for itself and justify the effort to keep it to the high standard it had been renovated to. This led to a new venture…Strontian Luxury Let (just in case you happen to be looking for a staycation in the breath-taking West Highlands this year!).
With the let came a desire to treat my guests to a few extra luxuries, one of which was skincare and toiletries to reflect the natural beauty of the surroundings. Alas, I was to discover that no one local made the sort of high end natural and organic products I was really looking for, and so I settled for a brand (they shall remain nameless!) that fulfilled a need if not a desire.
My inspiration for starting The Sunart Soap Co.
Things meandered along quite nicely for a wee while. Then about 5 years ago, a series of personal life changes came in succession culminating in the passing of my wonderful father, one of the kindest men I have ever known. Before he passed away he urged me to find some joy and passion in life and to do something that fulfilled that purpose and inspired me.
A few months later I happened across an advert for a soap making course from The Arienas Collective, run by the fabulous Lynn Powell. A spark of an idea was formed, and so off I went to learn something creative! The course was run by Jenny Smith of The Scottish Soapworks. Once we got chatting, we immediately saw the potential to build a brand encapsulating my story and promoting Ardnamurchan and its surroundings, the area I had grown to love.
To me, this was the start of something special, that would be a fitting legacy for my father and the small inheritance he had left me. Just like that, one became three, and Jenny and her partner, Paul joined my team to develop and launch ‘The Sunart Soap Co.’
Our small but mighty team
Three soon became four with Graham Edwards, an ex-colleague of mine who had retired and started his award winning GE Photography business (it’s good to have creative friends!) in Dumfries. Graham, like Jenny, bought into the project with passion and enthusiasm and his input on bringing our products to life has, and continues to be, a joy to the senses.
With help from one of Jenny’s friends Allison, we then had a copywriter. After a stop start affair with Social Media, Becky joined our collective bringing the art of marketing to a new level combined with a real drive for business development. The final piece of the team jigsaw has been to engage the services of the wonderful David Montgomery of Media Monty who helped us create some engaging videos to promote the products from our 3 current ranges - Berry, Herb and Wood.
